This seminar considers the structure and decision-making processes of the Security Council and the mechanisms available to the Security Council to respond to threats to the peace, acts of aggression and gross violations of human rights.
It will examine case studies where the Security Council has authorized action (including economic sanctions, military force, humanitarian intervention and peacekeeping) to maintain or restore the peace, and legal and policy issues that arise from such activities. It will also consider how the relevant Charter provisions have been interpreted and applied to address new and unexpected challenges to international peace, especially those arising from internal conflicts, failed states and terrorism.
