Khayelitsha, a township in Cape Town, is one of the most dangerous communities in South Africa and is the location of some of the most harrowing incidents of violent crime in the country. The creation of the
O’Regan/Pikoli Commission of Inquiry into Policing in Khayelitsha in 2011 represented a crucial moment in South Africa due to the Commission’s attempt to effect long-term systematic change in the criminal justice system and its operation in poor and working class communities. Zenande Booi, Crowley Fellow in International Human Rights, will give an account of the over-a-decade long campaign led by the residents of Khayelitsha to create the Commission, and will discuss the ongoing efforts to ensure that key findings and recommendations by the Commission are implemented.
Kosher pizza will be served.
