Next To Die is a documentary by JOYNEWS’s Seth Kwame Boateng on the needless death of mothers and babies in Ghana’s second biggest hospital, the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital located in the Ashanti Region of Ghana. As a result of acute congestion at the hospital, which serves eight of the ten regions in Ghana, pregnant women in labour are made to join long queues because there are only two delivery beds available. Some of these women deliver on the floor as they wait in the queue. There are also only two surgical theatres for caesarean section hence any woman rushed in who needs immediate surgery at a time the two theatres are occupied are also made to join a queue. Some die while waiting. This documentary also reveals how on the average about four babies die at the hospital everyday due to infections. The congestion is so bad that more than four babies are made to share a single cot and an incubator. As a result of this documentary, funds have been raised to complete a long abandoned 1,000 bed capacity maternity.
The film screening will be followed by a discussion with Seth Kwame Boateng, moderated by Kwaku Agyeman-Budu, SJD Candidate, Fordham Law School.
