Speaker: Dmitri Holtzman, Founder and former Executive Director of Equal Education Law Centre (EELC)
The right to basic education is provided for in section 29 of the Constitution of the Republic of South Africa. Equal Education and the Equal Education Law Centre lead nation-wide campaigns, including strategic litigation, involving thousands of high school learners, parents and teachers, aimed at improving the conditions of public schools across the country and advancing the right to basic education. These campaigns have already succeeded in securing the first-ever establishment of school infrastructure norms and standards in post apartheid South Africa for the over 24,000 public schools in the country. Dmitri Holtzman will discuss the roles of mass mobilization and the law in achieving these victories in education reform in South Africa.
