Speaker: Graeme Reid, Director of Human Rights Watch's LGBT Rights Program

The rights of LGBT people remain highly contested internationally.  On the one hand, significant advances have been made, including the recent UN appointment of an Independent Expert on sexual orientation and gender identity.  On the other hand, over 75 countries criminalize same-sex conduct and some outlaw LGBT activity and expression. Graeme Reid, Director of Human Rights Watch’s LGBT Rights Program, will discuss the work of Human Rights Watch in documenting abuses against LGBT people and advocating for change.

Graeme Reid has conducted research, taught and published extensively on gender, sexuality, LGBT issues, and HIV/AIDS. Before joining Human Rights Watch in 2011, Reid was the founding director of the Gay and Lesbian Archives of South Africa, a researcher at the Wits Institute for Social and Economic Research and a lecturer in Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender Studies at Yale University. An anthropologist by training, Reid received a MA from the University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg, and a PhD from the University of Amsterdam.

Kosher pizza will be served.
